A few years back, I quit my job at a large legal corporation and dedicated my practice to helping parents protect their kids, wealth and values. I cherish the relationships that I have with the North Carolina families I serve and take pride in knowing that my clients are fully protected both during life and after.
When I started my Lake Norman law firm knew I wanted to do estate planning, but also knew that I wanted to do more than draft form documents and send my clients out the door, which is exactly what we had done at the traditional firm I worked for during law school. Changes had to be made.
One of the first things I changed was the type of planning I did. At the old firm, we churned out form documents that planned for what happens to assets at death, which is what we all think of when we discuss estate planning. As an wife and aunt preparing to start a family of my own, I knew that I could do much more than that. I now integrate comprehensive guardianship planning into each plan to ensure that minor children will be immediately protected in the way that their parents desire in the event of any temporary or continuing emergency situation.
The second change I made to the way I practiced was to ensure that my plans would continue to work. At the old firm, we prepared and executed the documents and sent them home with our clients, where they would sit on a shelf never to be thought of again. Lives change. Relationships change. People change. I now systematically review the plans we prepare every three years and offer membership programs for more regular review. One of the greatest services I can provide is to make sure that every plan will work not if, but when the family needs it.
The last change I made was not related to the planning itself, but the way I charged for it. At the old firm, we charged on an hourly basis. Knowing that they were going to be charged in 6 minute increments at $30 a pop, clients were less likely to discuss their needs or ask questions, which meant that they didn't have the best plan for their circumstances and often didn't really understand what they were putting in place. They certainly didn't want to call to ask about funding their trusts or whether a change in circumstance would warrant additional planning, knowing that after each phone call or meeting they would be receive a bill. To best commit to the other changes I made, I decided to stop billing hourly. Now, all fees are at a flat rate, and you will know what they are at the start of our relationship. I want to understand your situation, prepare the best plan for you, and answer any questions you may have. If you need help with logistics, don't understand the documents, or have a change of circumstance, you can give me a call knowing that you will not receive a bill for that conversation. Now, I happily help families sleep well at night, knowing their loved ones will be taken care of in the best way possible when the worst has happened. I look forward to meeting you soon!
~Kelly
